Daily Readings & Thought for March 31st. "YOU WILL BE WITH ME IN PARADISE

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="zoomIn"][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Today's readings.. (numbers 14), (Proverbs 10), (Luke 23) Today we read of Jesus on the Cross. “The chief priests and the rulers and the people” [Luke 23 v.13] opposed Pilate’s decision to release him so he gave in and “delivered Jesus over to their will.”   He is crucified between two criminals and one of these derides him saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us,” but the other rebukes him and says, “we are receiving the due reward for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong” [v.39,41] Then he makes a request to Jesus which, together with Jesus’ answer, is widely misunderstood. He says, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom’. And Jesus says to him, ‘Truly I say to you today, you will be with me in paradise.’ “[v.42,43]  We have quoted exactly as in the Bible (ESV) with one little exception, we have put the comma after the word ‘today’ instead of before it. The original Greek has no punctuation so translators use their own judgement as to how to punctuate the text when rendering it in English – or any other language - and nearly all of them get it wrong in this verse.  The question the criminal asked indicates he knew the teachings of Jesus but had turned to bad ways: maybe he learnt the prayer Jesus taught, ”Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth …” [Matt.6 v.10].The word ‘paradise’ means a garden, a park – the Garden of Eden was a paradise.   The whole world will become the Garden of Eden when Jesus sets up God’s kingdom’.  Jesus promised, “to the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” [Rev. 2 v,7]. It is obvious that Jesus is not referring to heaven when he made this promise. After he came out of the tomb he said to Mary Magdalene, “I have not yet ascended to the Father” [John 20 v.17].  The criminal re-established his relationship with Jesus because of his faith – and for that reason he received this promise of a place in the paradise of God’s kingdom.  He had remarkable faith in the future that awaited Jesus when the disciples had lost theirs!  A closing thought is to note the mistake some make in saying that since this repentant criminal was not baptised – baptism is not essential.  They forget that baptism is a symbol of the death and resurrection of Jesus as Paul makes plain in Romans 6 v. 3-8.  Baptism became essential after the resurrection of Jesus. Those who only knew the baptism of John had to be rebaptised (see Acts 19 v.3-5) The whole world is to become a paradise!  What wonders await all who will be with Jesus then! Will you be with him in paradise?. Daily Readings & Thought for March 30th. “LIKE GRASSHOPPERS”

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="zoomIn"][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Today's readings.. (Numbers 12,13), (Proverbs 8,9), (Luke 22) Can you imagine yourself as a member of the Israelites who miraculously escaped from Egypt?  After seeing all the remarkable plagues, the wonder of crossing the Red Sea, then camping beside Mt. Sinai with the earth quaking, the clouds, the fire and the voice from the mountain!  After that the miraculous provision of manna, also quails, and the water from the rock. Then, the teamwork to build the tabernacle as a centre of worship, with the divine presence indicated by fire and cloud!  Next the great celebration of a ‘Passover’, one year and one month after leaving Egypt.  Surely, if we had been part of all that, our confidence and anticipation of God’s power to lead us to the promised land would be very great.  Well might we be astonished at what we read today in Numbers!  Why did 10 of the 12 spies sent to explore the land, come back in such a negative frame of mind?  Although they said the land ‘flows with milk and honey and this is its fruit.”[13 v.27] They spoke against the two other spies who came back and had said, “Let us go up at once and occupy the land for we are well able to overcome it.” [v.30]   But the 10 said “We are not able … for they are stronger than we are … all the people we saw in it are of great height … we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers” [v.31-33] We are going to read of God’s anger with them because of this failure of faith after all the evidence they had experienced of his power that had surrounded them to their benefit.  Let us examine all the evidence for our own faith.  How strong are our convictions in serving God?  If serious difficulties arise will our faith falter?  Will we only follow in the way of faith, when all is readily provided and there are deliverances and blessings? Recall that remarkable Psalm 139 we read recently, David wrote, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me … see if there be any grievous way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.” [v.23,24]. Next month we will read Moses’ final message to the people before he dies,  “and you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these 40 years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not” [Deut.8 v.2]. It was a message to the next generation, for their parents had died during the 40 year journey.  They had learnt their lesson the hard way!  Are we sure we have learnt ours?   If massive problems arise as this world falls apart – will we seem “like grasshoppers”?  Or will our faith be such as to give us “full assurance” -  Read Hebrews 10 v.22,23 [vc_column_text]   [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPiEzfx-8Cc[/embedyt][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]https://www.podbean.com/site/default/externalPodcastBadges[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] https://christadelphianvideo.org/tftd/daily-readings-thought-for-march-30th-like-grasshoppers-2/?feed_id=33163&_unique_id=6424c46cae7a5

Repealing the Disengagement Law: (The law requiring the disengagement from Gush Katif.)

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="none"]
Repealing the Disengagement Law
This week, the Knesset voted to repeal a portion the law requiring the disengagement from Gush Katif.

In the background in the Knesset, amidst the uproar around the judicial reforms, another small step has been made by the current coalition. However, to understand this we must first go back to 2005.
In 2005, Ariel Sharon was the prime minister of Israel. He had won the elections on the mandate of a right-wing government, and he himself was often referred to as the father of the settlements. No one could have guessed the U-turn that his government would make. A couple of months after Ariel Sharon was elected to become prime minister, he proposed the “disengagement plan implementation law”. This law made way for the Israeli disengagement of Gaza. It involved the withdrawal from 21 Israeli Settlements in the Gaza Strip. In addition to this, four settlements in the West Bank were also withdrawn from and dismantled. The four settlements  in the West Bank were Kadim, Ganim, Homesh and Sa-Nur. This withdrawal, often called the disengagement from Gush Katif resulted in huge protests from the Israeli Right-wing. In fact, the backlash from the Knesset members even caused Ariel Sharon to form a new political party. Back then Netanyahu had strong comments about the plan, following his resignation from the government:
“Only we in the Knesset are able to stop this evil. Everything that the Knesset has decided, it is also capable of changing. I am calling on all those who grasp the danger: Gather strength and do the right thing. I don't know if the entire move can be stopped, but it still might be stopped in its initial stages. [Don't] give [the Palestinians] guns, don't give them rockets, don't give them a sea port, and don't give them a huge base for terror.”
One of the major arguments of the right-wing was that giving land to Hamas could only result in more terrorism and violence for Israelis. The following years have been evidence to the truth of these concerns. Hamas has turned the Gaza into a terror state, often using foreign aid to assist in their war for their annihilation of the Jewish people. It seems they set this goal above the needs of their own people, resulting in terrible oppression and corruption.
The people who were worst affected by the disengagement were the residents who lived in the settlements. Many people moved to the Israeli settlements in Gaza to protest the actions of the government. Similarly, the soldiers who were picked to carry out the law, were left in a moral quandary, not willing to evict Jews from their own land. This resulted in outcry and many soldiers were court-marshalled for insubordination. This is ironic, particularly at the moment, as soldiers on the left-wing are currently holding the government to ransom by refusing to show up for duty over the judicial reforms. The Chief Rabbi of Gush Gatif (the block of settlements in Gaza) had this to say at the time:
“It took 3 decades. 30 years to build Gush Katif. It took 3 hours to demolish a settlement, it took three minutes to demolish a house. It is easy to ruin, but hard to repair.”

Repealing the Law

In the last couple of weeks, the first few incremental steps towards repair have begun. The government have just voted to repeal a portion of the disengagement law. They only repealed the section of the law applying to the four settlements that were demolished in the Samaria. Settler leaders and right wing MKs have welcomed the move calling it a “first step” towards re-establishment. Their vision is the complete repeal of the law although this is still some way off for now. This new development was particularly poignant for one MK from Otzma Yehudit. Limor Son Har Melech lived in Homesh, before the expulsion and lost her husband in a terrorist attack nearby the settlement. She had this to say:
Our vision is the complete cancellation of the Disengagement Law and the return of all settlements that were evacuated and destroyed – the four settlements in northern Samaria and twenty-two settlements in Gush Katif, It is an inseparable part of the Land of Israel, our homeland, and we have the right and duty to settle there
While repealing this law may be more of a salute than a change to facts on the ground at the moment, once again, it demonstrates the fundamental change of direction in Israel over the last decade or two. One of the major reasons for this was the total failure of the disengagement law. Ariel Sharon tried to trade land for peace with the Palestinians. In effect, the result was catastrophic. All that happened was the forming of a terror state right on Israel’s front door. This failure has been apparent for all Israel to see, meaning that the idea of land for peace is now far less popular. The ideology of the right wing, with Netanyahu being the chief proponent is to make peace from a  position of strength. This was the case the Abraham Accords. Peace with Israel was practical and advantageous because Israel have the means to help other nations in the regional conflict with Iran. This shift in Israeli thinking also has implications for settlements in the West Bank. It seems that no one in their right minds would now be willing to take the security risk of evacuating well established settlements in Judea and Samaria. In fact steps are being taken in the opposite direction - repealing the disengagement law is an example of this.

Implications for Bible Prophecy

As described in Ezekiel 36-38, we expect to see the settlements on the mountains of Israel continue to grow and we are also waiting for the time of peace that is referred to, before the Gogian invader comes upon the land. The failure of Gush Katif was a formative moment in modern Israel, effecting both these areas of Bible Prophecy. This has been Daniel Blackburn joining you for this weeks' edition of Bible in the News.

Daily Readings & Thought for March 29th. “DISTRESS OF NATIONS IN PERPLEXITY”

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="zoomIn"][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Today's readings.. (Numbers 11), (Proverbs 7), (Luke 21)  The perplexity among the nations today is remarkable.  With an aggressive Russia in Ukraine a situation that has com about by conditions and complacency of nations. A factor in this is that the USA has to some degree lost its power and strong influence.   Money has been king, the ability to influence others has been achieved by having plenty of money and strong military power. .  Today’s reading in Luke 21 tells us that Jesus said that his return to the earth would be at a time of “distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves.”[v.25] This primarily speaks of the state of the distress of nations because of the roaring of the social fabric of society, but it also has a duel application to the natural. The threat of roaring seas, especially tsunamis, has caused great anxieties, The massive earthquake and tsunami off the coast of Japan caused very serious problems – and these continue.   Warning systems have now been put in place, but these will not stop the seas roaring – only just give a few minutes warning. However, we can see that the words of Jesus, as do several others things he said, reflect words written in the Old Testament and indicate even greater distresses are to come.  Look at the language in Psalm 46. “we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though the waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling … the nations rage, the kingdoms totter ; he utters his voice, the earth melts … Come, behold the works of the LORD, how he has wrought desolations on the earth.  He makes wars cease to the end of the earth … [v.2,3,6,8,9]. Just as one is able to pick out the prophecies that were fulfilled at the first coming of Jesus, so we ponder those that we judge must apply to his second coming.  Jesus continued by speaking of “people fainting with fear and foreboding of what is coming on the world” [v.26].  But those who know the Bible will carefully read the words of Jesus that follow and take them to heart, “Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near” [v.28]  This  “redemption” of course, is for his committed followers.  Make sure that includes you.. Returning to Psalm 46, take special note of the positive message in the last 2 verses, “Be still and know that I am God I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”  Make sure that he is your fortress – remember how Jesus told the parable of those who knocked at the door – but it was too late – remember what you read in Luke 13 v.25.    [vc_column_text] [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQaJbfmgkGU[/embedyt][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]https://www.podbean.com/site/default/externalPodcastBadges[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] https://christadelphianvideo.org/tftd/daily-readings-thought-for-march-29th-distress-of-nations-in-perplexity-2/?feed_id=33184&_unique_id=6423731193013
