Iran Strikes Israel! Iran directly attacks Israel with suicide drones, cruise & ballistic missiles.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]
Last weekend the gloves finally came off.  Choosing to send an army of 170 suicide drones, 30 cruise missiles and 120 ballistic missiles into foreign territory, is a virtual declaration of war with the country to which those missiles are sent. This has been a long time in coming. For decades, Iran has hidden behind its proxies in the middle east and operated indirectly through those channels (Hezbollah/Hamas/Houthis), fearing direct reprisals from Israel. For the first time since the Iranian Revolution, Iran attacked Israel from their own soil.
Iran’s Drone and Missile Attack
In the early hours of the Sunday morning, Iran launched missiles that arrived in Israeli airspace and were shot down by Israel’s defence systems. Nearly all of the drones were shot down before they even reached Israeli airspace by a combination of Israeli, US, UK and French forces. Many people in Israel woke up to the cruise and ballistic missiles being shot down in the sky above their heads. Even in the skies around Jerusalem, missiles were being shot down. This presents the rather puzzling spectacle of the State of Israel defending the Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa and other Islamic holy sites from a radical Islamic regime. The footage of the missiles cruising across Israeli skies before being shot down was both dramatic and shocking. The only casualty from the attack was a beduin girl in the Negev who was hit by a piece of shrapnel. Amidst the calls for de-escalation, Israel responded to the attack in the early hours of this morning.
The Tehran Times celebrates operation "True Promise" against Israel.
Current news suggests that Israel launched a missile at an Iranian airbase. This attack was humorously and perhaps appropriately described as “lame” by Itamar Ben Gvir, a member of Israel’s security cabinet and part of Netanyahu’s government. This response seems to have been designed to show some retaliation, whilst not allowing the situation to escalate out of control. The missile attack was also down-played in Iranian media, suggesting that they also are not looking for escalation.

The West Discourages Retaliation

We should take a moment to pause and take stock of the world’s response to this attack. Both the US and UK among others have patronisingly warned Israel all week to “show restraint”. Their fears of escalation in the region are well-founded and reasonable - escalation is in no one’s interest. However, if southern Ireland sent 170 drones, 30 cruise missiles and 120 ballistic missiles into UK territory, I would be interested in the kind of “restraint” that Rishi Sunak may or may not show. What about if Mexico sent an army of drones and missiles across the border? How would the US administration respond? When it comes to the Jewish people, the double standard is clear to see - there is an hypocrisy behind the calls of the Western world for restraint, further isolating the Jewish people, even from their allies. Deterrence is a corner stone of any sovereign country’s existence and survive. If you cannot deter your enemies from attacking you then your country has serious problems. If Israel were to let such a huge attack take place with no response, they would be merely encouraging further violence. Deterrence, not weakness is the path to peace. If the US or UK were attacked, this would almost certainly be the line they would take. Iran claimed that this was a response to Israel’s bombing of their embassy in Syria. The problem with this pretext is that Israel’s strike of the embassy took out one the key masterminds behind the Oct 7th attacks. This was no escalation by Israel but rather part of a reasonable and balanced response to the Oct 7 terrorism. The weakness of the West, particularly when it comes to the Biden Administration has been crucial in the unfolding of events over the past four years. One of the major selling points of Joe Biden, emphasised by the democrats was that he supposedly wouldn’t start WW3. With Donald Trump, this was a real possibility according to the left. After two major wars started around the world, along with a disastrous withdrawal from Afganistan, a direct attack on Israel from Iran and a border crisis at home, this position is no longer tenable. The lack of deterrence shown by the Biden Administration has not turned out well. The same officials now advising Biden, predicted Donald Trump would set the world on fire by moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem. No such thing happened. It has been the lack of deterrence that has contributed to a dangerous world. This is important from a biblical perspective: Ezekiel 38 presents Sheba/Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish as bystanders in the conflict. There is no involvement or retaliation from those parties, but rather a a mild questioning response to the invasion of the land of Israel. The weakness demonstrated by the West is showing in real time how a situation like this could unfold. Identity politics, the culture war and polarisation in the West could easily be the cause of it’s decline, leaving the world with less deterrence and a far more dangerous place than it was during the zenith of American power.

Who was Celebrating Iran’s attack?

Outside of the British embassy in Iran, members of the public gathered to celebrate the attack on Israel. This is not shocking. However, it was also reported that anti-Israel protests across the  West also celebrated Iran’s strike on Israel, literally at the same time that the missiles were being fired. This is another staggering example of the latent anti-Semitism that has exploded since Oct 7th. There were other protestors in New York City who carried Hezbollah flags or other Hamas icons such as a headdress. After Oct 7th, antisemites have came out to protest in droves, claiming they were just anti-Israel and not antisemitic. When you are celebrating an Iranian missile attack on the Jewish people - you are not a constructive critic of Israel. You do not support the right of Israel to exist in their land - this is the latest mutation of Antisemitism. This mutation has been dubbed “Israelophobia” by some [1]. The ADL, (anti defamation league) said that antisemitic incidents have doubled in the last year. The frog-like sprits, in Revelation 16 describe how humanism popularised in the French Revolution would lead to Antisemitism with all nations gathered against Jerusalem to battle. Today, we see this spirit at work among the nations - this can only lead in one direction. We shouldn’t be surprised to see an increase ini antisemitism as the return of the Lord Jesus Christ grows nearer.

What about the other Arab Nations?

One of the key themes in Ezekiel 38 is the elusive state of “peace and safety” found on the mountains of Israel directly before the confederacy of nations invade the land. We certainly do not see a situation of peace in the land of Israel today. However, over recent years, this prospect has begun to seem more and more viable. Egypt signed a peace accord in the 1970s, as did Jordan, a few decades later. More recently, the Abraham Accords formed the foundation for peace between Israel and various surrounding Arab states such as the UAE and Bahrain. It was remarkable to see how some of these countries responded to Iran’s attack. Jordan for example, which has been heavily critical of Israel of the past months, intercepted dozens of drones from Iran last weekend. Whatever words they might condemn Israel with so as to not lose face with her Arab neighbours, when push comes to shove, Jordanian weaponry fought with the Jewish people against Iran. Ironically, this makes Jordan less radical than many protestors in New York City. But The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials, said Iran tipped off several Gulf states about the timing and nature of the attack it was planning. They then passed the information to the US, Israel's key international ally. "Arab countries quietly passed along intelligence about Tehran's attack plans, opened their airspace to warplanes, shared radar tracking information or, in some cases, supplied their own forces to help" the Journal reported, citing the sources. The Times of Israel reported that this intelligence was key to thwarting Iran’s assault. Even when things have been strained for Israel with the Arab world because of events in Gaza, there is still a warming of ties that is inevitably growing stronger. The same article also suggested that other Arab countries supplied their own forces to help Israel, although it is unclear which nations that might be. We might not be very far away from a world-changing peace accord between Israel and Saudi Arabia although it seems likely that Israel will have to finish up in Gaza before anything further can officially happen. The events of the last week are a testament to the possibility of peace.

Iran to be Aligned with Russia (Eze 38)

Ezekiel 38:1-5 outlines confederacy that will be lead by Gog against Israel. One of the nations included in the list is Persia, or modern-day Iran. It is no surprise to see the anti-Israel rhetoric of this radical nation against the Jewish people in the latter days. Iran is becoming more and more closely aligned with the Russia. A couple of days ago, the FDD put out an article with the headline: “Russia defends Iranian Attack on Israel”. It explains how Russia criticised Israel’s “blatant” attack on the embassy in Syria. Russia’s permanent representative to the UN also expressed appreciation for Irans show of restraint. An FDD senior fellow wrote that, “Make no mistake, Russia is now Iran’s lawyer on the UN Security Council.” “That Moscow would back the Iranians at the UN Security Council comes as no surprise. Tehran continues to aid Russia in its war against Ukraine, while Moscow is keen to exploit the Middle East crisis and resents what it sees as over-the-top Israeli airstrikes in Syria. While Israel was the intended victim of last weekend’s Iranian barrage, Shahed drones continue to bombard Ukrainian cities, and Ukraine may soon also face strikes by Iranian-supplied ballistic missiles. This is all the more reason why Washington and its allies must shore up Ukraine’s air defenses without further delay.” — John Hardie, Deputy Director of FDD’s Russia Program. We are seeing God’s hand at work as he aligns the nations against the Jewish people, in preparation for day when they will descend upon the mountains of Israel.

They tried to kill us, we survived, LET’S EAT

As we reflect on the latest attack on the Jewish people, it is fitting that next week Passover will begin. During the Passover meal, (the seder), the story of the miraculous deliverance from Egypt is recounted. The recounting of this story along with the myriad other deliverances of God’s people are often humorously summarised in with the phrase, “they tried to kill us, we survived, let’s eat”. This week, the latest iteration of that great story or theme of the Jewish people has been written. Once more, the hand of God has protected them just as he has for millennia. An old Jewish prayer, also sung on Passover is particularly relevant considering the forces of evil that lined up against God’s people once again - It is called “Vehi Sheamda” (a link to the song, as sung by Yossi Azulay can be found in the description[2]): “And it is this (the Torah) that has stood by our ancestors and for us. For not only one (enemy) has risen up against us to destroy us, but in every generation they rise up to destroy us. But the Holy One, Blessed be He, delivers us from their hands”. As we watch the turbulence of world around us, we pray for the day when the redeemer will come to Zion, to turn ungodliness from Jacob,  and that Jerusalem might arise and shine as the capital of the newly restored Kingdom of Israel. Join us again next week for another edition of Bible in the News. This has been Daniel Blackburn joining you. [1] See the book, “Israelophobia” by Jake Wallis Simons, Editor of the Jewish Chronicle, UK. This book explains the difference between criticising Israel and pure antisemitism. The book also makes the case for the connection between Antisemitism and the social justice movement. This explains how the Frog-like spirits (Humanism) could result in Antisemitism (Revelation 16). A Religious Awakening in Israel! Ten of thousands gather at the Western Wall to pray.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]During the passover holiday, tens of thousands of Jews attended the traditional priestly blessing ceremony at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Israel National News reported that, "During the ceremony, prayers were offered for the swift return of the hostages, for the healing of the wounded, and for the well-being of the State of Israel, the IDF soldiers, and the security forces.” [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjjPLEjNWxI[/embedyt] On a trip to Israel a few years ago we visited the Western wall plaza just before Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, for the prayers for forgiveness, a similar type of event to the one just held. There were thousands of people in attendance, the plaza was packed from one side to the other. One of the things that struck me, was the large proportion of Jewish people attending, which did not really look religious at all. It was a gathering of many different Jewish people, all together engaged in prayer. In the first decades Israel was much more a secular nation, as a result of being spearheaded in a large part by secular Jews, such as Theodore Herzl, the founder of the Zionist movement. However, this began to change with the large influx of Jews who had been expelled from Arab lands, who found a home in the State of Israel. Over the years Israel has become more and more religious. This has not just included a keeping of the commandments of traditional Judaism, but rather an awakening to the reality that the return of the Jewish people to the land of Israel, is a fulfillment of the words of the prophets and orchestrated by the hand of the Almighty. I have met a number of Jews in Israel, who have expressed these beliefs in the promises to Abraham and the prophets of Israel. Of course, we would not expect the Almighty to miraculously gather his scattered people from the four corners of the earth, from over 100 countries, speaking over 80 different languages and establish them as an independent nation, speaking the resurrected Hebrew language in their ancient homeland and not be shaping their hearts to transform them into a Godly nation. This is a work of time, a process, a development of faith. We can read of a similar effect in the coming of John the Baptist to the nation 2000 years ago. Luke 3:15 says, "And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Messiah, or not.” The people’s hearts were prepared to hear the teaching of John the Baptist and the Lord Jesus Christ. Yes, the people’s hearts had been prepared. Speaking of the days of restoration, in Ezekiel 36:26 God says, "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.” Again, this is a process. Removing an impenetrable heart of stone and replacing it with a teachable listening heart, is a process that takes time. Individually it can take years, nationally even more so. This is the great and miraculous work, that is going on in the nation of Israel today. A common and powerful phrase that comes up Ezekiel’s prophecies of restoration is, "and ye shall know that I am the LORD.” God will bring His people back to the land again and they will know that He is the LORD! This is what I have seen in the people of Israel today, a great awakening that it was the hand of the Almighty that preserved them and brought them back to the land of Israel. This awakening is a fact and not just among a few, but among many people in the nation of Israel. It is a reigning sentiment amongst religious Zionists, a large growing segment of Israeli society. This phenomena is astounding and cannot be denied. One of the voices of religious Zionism in the land of Israel, is the land of Israel network. Ari Abramowitz and Jeremy Gimpel, are very active on the channel and live in Judah at the Arugot farm, an incredible place which I visited in 2018. Ari did a short broadcast as the missiles from Iran were on the way over, headed to the land of Israel. I found Ari’s words quite incredible and an excellent example of this growing realization and faith in the nation of Israel. Again this is as the missles were in the air from Iran on the way to Israel. I would like to share them on Bible in the News. “Shalom friends, Ari Abramowitz here, in the hills of Judea. And I just made the final preparations here to make sure my family is comfortable in our safe room if it comes to that. But you know, there are missiles on their way here, drones, missiles on there way here and we all know that this could mean for Israel, for the entire world. The fate of mankind in someway really does hang in the balance and I don’t think I’m being over dramatic by saying that. But we should know that there is a Creator of heaven and earth. God gave us the Torah, HaShem is with us right now and he said, “V’hi Sh'amdah Livotanu” — every generation they will arise against us seek to destroy us. And He will protect us and He has protected us all of this time and I actually am comforted by the words of the prophets, because who would have thought that a nation could have their temple destroyed as prophesied, would be exiled around the world together and then not only would we be exiled but we would survive, which no other nation has done, and then we would be ingathered from the exile exactly as the prophets said, hundreds of times over in the Bible, gambling the veracity of their prophecy on these impossible to imagine prophecies coming to life, coming true. Our ancient dead language would be revived. And then as we return to the land, the nations would seek to divide our land, and they will blame us and call us thieves for stealing our indigenous homeland. And all of this is happening right before our eyes and we know the end! We know the end! And the end is that Ha’Shem will protect us. And I just sat here to open the book of Psalms, and as I opened the book it just “randomly" opened to Psalm 91 and I read it and it really spoke to my heart, so I thought I’d for all of you both in Hebrew and English. "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High abides under the protection of the Almighty. I say about God: “He is my refuge and my stronghold, my God, in whom I trust.” For he will save you from fowler’s trap, from the destructive plague.  He will cover you with his pinions, and you will find shelter under his wings; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrows that fly by day, the plague that stalks in the darkness, nor the pestilence that ravages at noon. Though thousands fall upon your left side, tens of thousands on your right, it shall not reach you. You will only look with your eyes, and witness the punishment of the wicked. For you said, “God is my refuge!" You made the Most High your shelter, no harm will befall you, no plague will reach your tent. For he will assign his angels to you, to guard you where ever you go. They will carry you upon their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on lions and vipers; you will trample on young lions and serpents. “Because he is devoted to me, I will save him; I will make him safe, for he knows my name. When he calls upon me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and bring him honor. I will satisfy him with long life, and show him my salvation.” “So, I mean, just, the thousands fall on your left side, tens of thousands on your right, it shall not reach you. If there is anyone that we can rely on, it is not the Biden administration, and it's not the Israeli government, it’s no flesh and blood, it is only the God of Israel, Creator of heaven and earth and He has promised us that He will protect us and that He is with us and that is where I put my faith. And I look forward to seeing all of you on the other side because I really believe with all my heart that directly correlated to the level of fear and instability and anxiety that we all feel on the other side of this will be peace and tranquility and love and goodness, that’s what is waiting for us!” Isaiah chapter 30, we could say, is Isaiah’s Ezekiel 38, it is a great prophecy for the latter day, the great day of Apocalypse or revealing. In verses 19-21, the prophet says, "For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem: thou shalt weep no more: he will be very gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; when he shall hear it, he will answer thee. And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers: And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.” Here we see a process. Adversity and affliction. Prayer to God that will be heard. Teachers sent to Israel to show the way. We are in this process. Everything that happens to Israel is for Israel. These are not random events. The current adversity is having a tremendous effect on the nation of Israel. We look forward to the peace, tranquility, love and goodness of the kingdom of God, that is on the other side of this period of adversity and affliction. May that day come quickly. Tensions Reach New Heights in the Middle East

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
The world is highly distressed at the potential outcomes in the Middle East, whether of Israel's entry into Rafah and the response of the surrounding nations or the possibility of a direct strike on Israel by Iran and the ensuing war that might follow.  In this troubled sea of political turmoil, the Bible holds out a message of hope.
The world is on edge this weekend following the threat of Iran to directly strike Israel. Israel had struck and killed Iranian generals and senior officials of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps who were meeting at an apartment building next door to Iranian Embassy in Damascus. Mohammad Reza Zahedi a senior commander of the elite Quds Force. He was thought to be the top Iranian military representative in Syria and Lebanon. Then, on Wednesday, an Israeli airstrike in Gaza killed the three sons of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Three of Haniyeh’s grandchildren are also reported to have been killed in the attack. The USS Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group is being repositioned closer to Israel’s shores. The USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Poland, France, Germany, Austria and Russia, among many others are issuing different levels of travel advisories or bans to Israel, Iran and the Middle East. Israel is poised to invade Rafah, the last stronghold of Hamas, in the coming days. The times of Israel reported: Defense Minister Yoav Gallant says Israeli troops were withdrawn from the Khan Younis area of southern Gaza to prepare for the expected offensive in Rafah. “The forces came out [of Gaza] and are preparing for their future missions, we saw examples of such missions in action at Shifa [Hospital], and also for their future mission in the Rafah area,” Gallant says following an assessment at the IDF Southern Command. “We will reach a situation where Hamas does not control the Gaza Strip and where it does not function as a military framework that poses a risk to the citizens of the State of Israel,” he adds. Governments from around the world have been warning or threatening Israel if it completes its mission to destroy Hamas. On Monday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that a date has been set for the invasion of Rafah: "We are constantly working to achieve our goals, first and foremost the release of all our hostages and achieving a complete victory over Hamas," Netanyahu said. "This victory requires entry into Rafah and the elimination of the terrorist battalions there. It will happen — there is a date." Negotiations have broken down again, as Hamas says it cannot locate even 40 live hostages out of the 133 it still has captive to facilitate an exchange. The world is terrified of what is coming.  Will Israel launch an attack into Rafah sparking further regional response? Will Iran attack Israel and bring about World War III? Will there be nuclear war in the Middle East? We know that Israel is not going to be obliterated because the land has been promised by Almighty God to Abraham and his children, and the promise of Christ reiterates this: “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5) Events are being shaped by the angelic hands to bring about the situation that will bring Israel to accept their Messiah and turn back to him. As we look at the events this week, we see things moving in that direction.
Destabilization in Jordan
A headline on the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs website stated, “Iran and Hamas Are Seeking to Destabilize the Jordanian Government.” The article stated: Iran and Hamas have succeeded in destabilizing the Jordanian government, prompting concerns among Gulf countries about a potential “domino effect” spreading throughout the region. Jordan has witnessed its largest demonstrations in recent memory, with protesters expressing support for Hamas and opposing the continuation of conflict in the Gaza Strip. These protests, orchestrated by Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood in coordination with Iran, aim to undermine the rule of King Abdullah and create a new front against Israel along the Jordanian border. Jordanian security services have detained hundreds of political activists from different parties since the beginning of the 7 October war. Jordanian authorities have been caught off guard by the size of the Ramadan protests, outside the Israeli embassy, which average between 6,000 to 10,000 participants. According to the Middle Eastern Eye. The agency also reported Samih Al-Maaytah, a former Jordanian information minister as stating: "Hamas abroad is trying to pressure Jordan to restore relations with the movement," he said, citing a speech on 26 March in Amman by Meshaal, the head of Hamas abroad, calling on millions to take to the streets. Hamas wants to send a message that it can influence and lead the Jordanian street, which is also convenient for the Iranians who have not been able to exercise any political influence in Jordan.” The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs summed up the situation stating: Iran and its resistance axis pose a threat to the stability of Arab regimes, reminiscent of the “Arab Spring” uprisings in 2011. The specter of a “domino effect” looms large, potentially spreading from Jordan to other U.S.-aligned Arab nations. In response, Gulf countries are expected to extend financial assistance to Jordan to bolster its stability against the Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood threats and Iran’s broader influence. They aim to contain the threat and prevent its spread to their own territories. Biblically speaking we know that Jordan is not part of the invading alliance described Daniel and Ezekiel.  Daniel tells us: “He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.” (Daniel 11:41) Rather than being allied Russian led Northern confederacy, like Iran (Ezekiel 38:5), Jordan is protected by the Southern confederacy. The role of Hamas inciting the Palestinian population in Jordan may well stele the government against it, and see them reaching out to other Israeli-friendly Arab states for support.
The Lord’s Doing
While the world writhes in political turmoil, one thing is certain, Israel’s presence in the Middle East is God’s doing, and is unchangeable. Nations may wish for Netanyahu’s replacement with a leader that is more pliable to Western pressure, but God is ultimately in control. While we may look in dismay at the current American President turning against Israel, the words of Rabshakeh are brought to mind: “Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.” (2 Kings 18:21) This is true of Israel today: if it puts its trust in America, it will be sorely disappointed. It is fascinating to see Israeli’s today who understand this principle. Jeremy Gimpel is a US borne religious Zionist, who made Aliyah to Israel at age 11. He is a Rabbi, a commander in the IDF reserves, and lives on the Arugot Farm in the Judean mountains, close to Gush Etzion region, with his wife Tehilla and six children. This is what he posted just over a month ago: Shalom friends, Jeremy Gimpel from the Arugot Farm.  I just want to give you a perspective of what is happening inside Israel right now. Last week reports came out that the Biden Administration is sanctioning a company that developed specific parts for the Iron Dome defensive system. So, President Biden has decided not eliminate the offensive abilities of Israel, not to not sell us bullets or weapons, but the defensive systems are now being targeted. Now, imagine what that means. If you see the Iron Dome technology you’ll see that is lifesaving for Israeli citizens. Over 10,000 rockets have been shot on to Israel since October 7th. And now the Biden Administration is saying, sorry we’re going to put an end to that. And everyone knows, if your eyes are open what is happening right now. This video just came out last week, and you see dozens and dozens of tanks and armed vehicles that are making their way up north toward Lebanon. So Israel, now, like a child on a playground, has a bully that attacked him, and Israel is punching the bully, and some how the bully gets knocked down. He’s not knocked out yet in the south, he is just knocked down, and already now we have to turn north and go after Hezbollah while that bully is still down. We are going to be fighting on two fronts. And what is America’s response? Let’s sanction the company that provides them the defensive system to protect their own civilians. So a lesson must be learned here. Our salvation will not come from the White House and from Washington. Israel is destined to stand alone. Now we can either prepare, choose to stand alone, because we stand with God, or we will end relying on a broken reed of America who will ultimately splinter our own hands. Those are the choices that we have. So aside from waking up to the threats that are all around us and can never rely ever again on security fences or on technologies, but we must root out the evil around us. We also need to realize that the allies that we relied on, they’re not to be relied on. The only ones we can rely on are ourselves and our God. That’s it. The scriptures are clear: “Put not your trust in princes, Nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; In that very day his thoughts perish.” (Psalm 146:3–4) Rather, their trust needs to be in their God: “Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope is in the Lord his God: Which made heaven, and earth, The sea, and all that therein is: Which keepeth truth for ever: Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: Which giveth food to the hungry. The Lord looseth the prisoners: The Lord openeth the eyes of the blind: The Lord raiseth them that are bowed down: The Lord loveth the righteous: The Lord preserveth the strangers; He relieveth the fatherless and widow: But the way of the wicked he turneth upside down. The Lord shall reign for ever, Even thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. Praise ye the Lord.” (Psalm 146:5–10) The situation in Israel will bring about a change of allegiance in God’s people. They will gradually shift away from trusting in America, or in their own IDF, and put their trust in Almighty God himself.
An Anchor in a Sea of Turmoil
The situation in the world around us parallels the time at the end of Judah’s commonwealth, but with remarkably different outcomes. At the time the Lord warned: “And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.” (Luke 21:25–26) Truly, men’s hearts are failing them for fear in anticipation of what is coming. There seems to be no way out. Daniel captured the atmosphere when describing the kingdom of men: “Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea.” (Daniel 7:2) There will be no lasting peace while the empires of man content for their place and clamber to be at the zenith. The scriptures accurately describe the situation: “But the wicked are like the troubled sea, When it cannot rest, Whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.” (Isaiah 57:20–21) While the world reels too and fro in the storm, we have hope. We cannot be paralysed with fear as the world descends into chaos. Remember the words of the Lord: “And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” (Luke 21:28) Paul, reiterated the confidence we have in the hope set before us: “And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee…. Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability (unchangeableness) of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable (unchangeable) things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast….” (Hebrews 6:11–19) This anchor can keep us weathering the storm, turning to face it from whatever direction it comes, while being securely fixed in our convictions. As we watch the Bible in the news, our prayer is that mankind would see the hand of God, as the Psalmist expresses: “Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, And he saveth them out of their distresses. He sent his word, and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions. Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men! And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, And declare his works with rejoicing. They that go down to the sea in ships, That do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord, And his wonders in the deep. For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, Which lifteth up the waves thereof. They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: Their soul is melted because of trouble. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, And are at their wits’ end. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, And he bringeth them out of their distresses. He maketh the storm a calm, So that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad because they be quiet; So he bringeth them unto their desired haven.” (Psalm 107:19–30) We await the arrival of the messiah on into this stormy sea, who with a simple command “peace be still” can still the sea of nations as he establishes the kingdom of God on this earth.
