[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css="" css_animation="none"]In this Series, we aim to bring perspective to matters of current news items from a Biblical viewpoint. Whether Prophecy or Moral and Social issues, we highlight Biblical instruction relating to those breaking stories on the world stage. In this revealing Watchman Report, we delve into the sobering words of Jeremiah 30:14—"All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not." This powerful exposition examines how Israel's allies abandoned her in times of distress, serving as a profound warning and reflection for today. Join us as we explore Scripture’s urgent message about divine judgment, human frailty, and the faithfulness of God. 🔔 *Subscribe* for more biblical insights and in-depth studies. In its full sense, Jacob being at rest, quiet and unafraid, relates to the kingdom age when our Lord Jesus Christ is reigning as king. But the Israel we see today at least partially reflects these words in that none makes the nation afraid. In verses 11-13, the prophet points out that the nation will not be unpunished, and he goes on to explain that this is because the nation is chronically flawed: For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished. For thus saith the LORD, Thy bruise is incurable, and thy wound is grievous. There is none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up: thou hast no healing medicines. These words relate to a moral or spiritual malaise, and that was certainly true of Judah in the days of Jeremiah. But they are equally true of the secular, worldly state of modern Israel. Verse 13 hints that there will be few who are willing to help Israel at the time of the end; “there is none to plead thy cause”. Jeremiah expands on this in verses 14-15: All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not; for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy sins were increased. Why criest thou for thine affliction? thy sorrow is incurable for the multitude of thine iniquity: because thy sins were increased, I have done these things unto thee. These words were true of Judah in Jeremiah’s day when they were overthrown by Babylon. They were true of the Jews in the first century when they were overthrown by Rome. And they are true of modern Israel. Ever since the day it proclaimed its independence in 1948, Israel has been subject to hostility from its neighbours. This could have moved them to draw closer to their God, but instead, it has just made the nation more and more determined to stand on its own feet. The attack by Hamas on southern Israel on 7 October 2023 is a prime example of the “chastisement of a cruel one” to which modern Israel has been subject. Israel’s aggressive response to this atrocity was immediately criticised by its long-term critics, but moderate and less hostile nations acknowledged Israel’s right to self-defence. In the two years since October 2023, however, support for Israel’s war in Gaza has evaporated. In recent weeks, there has been a concerted campaign to highlight the suffering of innocent civilians in Gaza, with a particular emphasis on the suffering of children. Harrowing images of emaciated children have shocked the world and fuelled anger towards Israel. The United Nations and others have spoken about a man-made famine in the Gaza Strip, and they are right. But a rational person might ask who has the most to gain from inducing famine and maximising the suffering of children. It is certainly not in Israel’s interest to allow innocent people to starve to death if it could be avoided. Hamas, however, has everything to gain from allowing the residents of Gaza to suffer, even to the point of death. But regardless of who is to blame for the problems in ensuring the supply of food to the people of Gaza, the images seen in recent weeks have painted Israel in a very bad light. More and more nations are loudly criticising Israel for its campaign in Gaza and demanding a halt to the war. France has led a slew of nations in declaring their intention to recognise Palestinian statehood in September. In the terms of verse 14, “All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not”. Israel is becoming more and more isolated in the world, which is what we expect at the time of the end. Arrogant and godless modern Israel will be punished by God, but when the nation is at its lowest ebb God will intervene to overcome her enemies and usher in the kingdom age, as verse 16 says: Therefore all they that devour thee shall be devoured; and all thine adversaries, every one of them, shall go into captivity; and they that spoil thee shall be a spoil, and all that prey upon thee will I give for a prey. We live in momentous times and on a daily basis we are being reminded that our Lord is nigh. May we have the wisdom to prepare for that day.
