The reason for this is that the verse overwhelmingly does not appear in early manuscripts of the Bible; not only that, but it shows signs of having been translated from Latin. The evidence shows that the passage was added to the Greek text of the Bible in the sixteenth century, long after the New Testament was written. It is worth thinking why this verse was added to the New Testament. The reason is that there is no other verse anywhere in the Bible which even gives a hint of the Doctrine of the Trinity. The theologians of the sixteenth century felt that they needed to put this verse into the New Testament to teach something that they believed, but which was absent from Scripture.
