On Tuesday this week, Isla Bryson, a transgender woman who raped two women was convicted and awaits sentencing next month. Isla Bryson first appeared in a scottish court in 2019 whilst known as Adam Graham. However, in the following year, Bryson told Jurors that he had made the decision to begin transition from a man to a woman
Since 2014, the Scottish Prison Service’s policy has been that prisoners should be accommodated on the basis of self-declared identity, subject to a risk assessment. The accommodation must best suit “the person’s needs and should reflect the gender in which they are currently living.” Up until the point of conviction, Isla Bryson was held on remand at a women’s prison, segregated from the other inmates. The community safety spokesman for the Scottish Conservatives, Russel Finlay commented that “It would be wrong to put a male-bodied rapist in a women's prison.”
On Thursday this week, Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish First Minister confirmed that Bryson would in fact be removed from the Woman’s prison and would not serve the sentence there. In fact, Bryson is expected to be moved to a male wing of a prison this week.
The Gender Reform Bill
Over the past weeks, this has been a subject of heated debate, with concerns being raised about the safety of other women in the prison being incarcerated with a male rapist. This tension was further exacerbated as the Scottish Parliament passed legislation last month aimed at making it easier for people to change their legally-recognised sex. This gender recognition Reform bill has been blocked by the UK Government over its potential impact on equalities laws that apply across Scotland, England and Wales. The Scottish conservative leader, Douglas Ross said his party had "warned for months" during the debate over the gender reforms that "violent criminals just like the sex offender, the absolute beast we are discussing today, would try to exploit loopholes in the law and attack and traumatise women.” He added: "It should not have taken public disgust and a slew of negative headlines about a double rapist being sent to a women's prison for Nicola Sturgeon to realise this was completely unacceptable and wrong. "She and her justice secretary have the power to impose a blanket ban on all rapists being sent to women's prisons, so why is she refusing to exercise it? "It suggests Nicola Sturgeon's screeching U-turn in the Bryson case was down to fears over the political risk to herself rather than the safety risk to women prisoners." Isla Bryson’s case is a further example that the extreme gender ideology currently being pushed across the western world today is unsustainable in real life. It is far easier to become a mouth piece for this ideology than it is to enforce it when it comes to things like prison policies, or sporting competition rules, since it is enforcing a pseudo-reality that doesn’t fit with everyday life.Bible Teaching about Gender
Whilst this is a negative subject, it can also be seen as a sign of the times, showing that we are living in the last days of the Kingdom of men. And whilst clearly, the apostles and prophets didn’t live in times when gender was as malleable as people claim today, nevertheless, the Bible does provide guidance on these issues. The book of Genesis tells us that “in the beginning, God created…”, and that everything he had made was “very good” (Gen 1:1,31). These statements have far reaching consequences. This very obvious bible teaching shows that God is sovereign, not man. God is the designer and knows what he intended for mankind and his creation, according to his wisdom. Men and woman were made to be different from the rest of the animal creation because they were made in the “image and likeness of God”. They can reflect moral values in the way that the rest of creation cannot. God chose to make us “male and female”. Men and women are different, but complementary, combining to achieve the aim God had in view. Similarly, Jesus affirms the teaching of Genesis in Matthew 19:4-6: "And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” This teaching sets out several things:- We are created beings, made by God.
- Male and female is part of God’s creative design
- The capacity to be “one flesh” (a biological function) is intrinsic to being male or female
- Mankind must not seek to alter God’s arrangement.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="none"]A @Christadelphians Video: Description: We need God's grace because we are sinners. The Bible tells us the steps to receive it: We recognise that we are sinners and repent, learning the Gospel message and being baptised. We continue to learn that we become like Christ. Then grace will be shown to us at Christ's return when God bestows immortality.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]A @Christadelphians Video: How much we can trust the Gospels depends on when they were written. If the Gospels were written in the lifetime of the Apostles, the Apostles would act as guarantors of their accuracy. If they were written after the time of the Apostles, then the Apostles could not act to ensure their reliability and the names we have attached to the Gospels (and to some of the letters) would be false. This video shows that the Gospels were written within the lifetime of the Apostles, and that they can therefore be considered to be reliable. The video shows that the Gospel of Mark was written first, between 50 and 55AD, with Luke written next, between 57 and 61AD (more likely in 60 or 61AD). Acts is written in early 62AD. The Gospel of John was written in 65 or 66AD. Matthew is the most difficult Gospel to date, but was certainly written before 70AD. It was probably written after Luke's Gospel, which would place it in the 60s AD, and probably before the start of the Jewish War in 66AD.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]As his ministry was reaching its climax, our Lord most bluntly confronted the religious leaders in Jerusalem. In today’s reading [Matt.23] he calls them “hypocrites” “blind guides” and “children of hell”. He says they concentrate on outward appearances “but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence” [23 v.25] His words stirred up their hatred of him, which had increased when they saw the adulation he received as he entered Jerusalem on the donkey. As a result they are now even more determined to destroy him. What is most interesting is that seven times in this chapter Jesus says “Woe to you” [v.13,15,16,23,25,27,29] The hidden sevens in the Bible are interesting, as we have noted in Revelation. It seems especially significant when he says, “Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape … all these things shall come on this generation.” [v.32,33,36]
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The world today puts a great lot of effort and money into marketing goods and services. The internet, radio, TV, newspapers magazines and sign boards are full of promotions of one kind of thing or another. A fundamental aim of the majority of this promotion is to make us envious of what other people have or experience – the aim is to make us want it ourselves!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="none"]Nearly 1,000 years after Abraham, when his descendants, the nation of Israel, had become a kingdom in the land of promise, God made further momentous promises to David the king: “I will set up thy seed after thee . . . and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be My son” (2 Sam. 7:12-14). These promises too were affirmed by God by covenant and oath (Ps. 89:3,4), and were reiterated by the angel Gabriel at the annunciation of Jesus’s birth (Lk. 1:32,33)

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Why did people follow Jesus? We know his disciples did, because he called them to do so, but others? We had an example in today’s chapter 20 in Matthew, “there were two blind men sitting by the roadside” [v.30] who cried out when they were told Jesus was passing by, “Lord, have mercy on us, ‘Son of David’” To call him ‘Son of David’ meant they acknowledged him as the Messiah.
“Jesus called them and said, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ With what sense of potential wonder would they have replied, “Let our eyes be opened.”[v.33]
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The last 2 verses of today’s chapter (19) in Matthew can be puzzling if we do not realize the chapter break is wrongly placed and the context includes the next chapter. The end of chapter 19 records Jesus as saying, “everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”
